After one of their first live performances in Columbus at the [living]
room, I would have to agree with the t-shirt that concluded, “TUB
rocks!”
The Uprising Band, known affectionately as TUB by
their loyal fans and groupies, will enchant you with a smile and then
knock your head off of your shoulders (with their music…of course!).
This group of five has a stage presence and professionalism that is
typical of bands who have been together much longer. You combine that
with a heart, passion, and intensity that lesser bands only dream of,
and it is certain that the cynical and dismissive listener will quickly
become a believer…and a proud owner of a “TUB Rocks” t-shirt.
The Uprising Band’s debut album, Until This, combines a diversity of genres, from metal and acoustic to traditional hymn and alt rock, into an uplifting, introspective look at life, faith, and hope.
C-buz caught up with the band before their show at the [living] room to find out more about TUB, their music, their message, and what the next few months look like for the band.
C-buz: Tell us about your music.
TUB:
We play songs (laughter). Pretty much rock-n-roll. We could say
Rock/Worship, but worship isn’t really a genre but refers more to the
lyrical content.
CB: If worship could be considered a genre
of music, it may be an unfamiliar genre to some C-buz readers, what
would you say to those who may have preconceived notions about your
music?
TUB: As soon as you label your band a Christian Rock
band, then people instantly think of that one cheesy band and say, “Uh yeah, cool, that’s alright…I’ve got something else going on.” For me, it is hard to do that to people you know. It is all about building relationships and then hopefully that will eliminate stereotypes.
CB: Is it fair or unfair to say that your music is only for Christians?
TUB:
People get the preconceived notion of a Christian band, maybe just like
they have of a church, that they are going to come to the show and get
something shoved down their throat and told all the things they are
doing wrong and things like that. Fifty percent of people who don’t go
to church is because they had a bad experience from someone at the
church.
“We want to be humble and true about our faith. We all mess up but this is why it is different for us. We just want to be real.”
CB: About your band, you realize that you guys would suck without Leslie, right?
TUB: (laughter). That’s totally true. We can accept that! That’s awesome!
CB: Why did you choose Until This as the title track?
TUB:
It seemed like a good overall description of the content of the album.
God just laid things in line for this album. Three of us had previously
tried to write songs and it just wasn’t working. And then for some
reason we decide to just record an album and all of sudden we start
writing all the songs for the album in a month and a half, and before
you know it we have eight or nine songs. It just wasn’t working, until
this. We give the credit to God, because we just aren’t that
good…seriously.
CB: What does the next six months look like for TUB?
TUB:
Lots of playing. The writing hasn’t stopped. We just have to get out
and go, go, go. We will be in surrounding states and hopefully be
playing a lot around here.
